The bloodsuckers are back with the latest instalment of the Twilight saga, Eclipse.
The first movie brought us vampires and the romance between Edward and Bella, the second introduced the werewolves and now it looks it's all set to get even more complicated.
Bella as usual is faced with all kinds of choices, not least whether to become a vampire herself and is torn between her love for Edward and her friendship (or is it more?) with werewolf Jacob. With an evil, serial killing vampire on the loose and tensions between the vampires and the werewolves at an all time high it looks like there's a battle brewing. The vampires are facing their greatest challenge yet, an army of 'newborns', newly 'turned' vampires with a violent bloodlust who are out to get the Cullen family. So they have no choice but to join forces with the wolf pack in order to protect Bella and save the clan.
This is a slightly more meaty film than its predecessors, mainly because of the great action sequences. The CGI with the wolves is stunning and there are some pretty impressive fight scenes too. However, this is still a soppy love story which feels rather shallow somehow. I never find Kristen Stewart's Bella that credible and here she looks like she's catching flies during most of the film as she does this pouty thing where she never closes her mouth - very annoying. There are plenty of scenes with the bare chested werewolves in their human form and we get some interesting back stories on some of the characters which gives it all a bit more oomph. Overall though, this is strictly aimed at fans of the franchise. Even lovers of vampire movies might find this all a bit anaemic although director David Slade does much better than the directors of the first two films and it's a shame he's not taking the helm for the final story, Breaking Dawn, which like the Harry Potter finale, is being filmed in two parts.
If you're a fan of the Twilight movies then you should enjoy this as it's definitely the best one so far. If you're not then there's really not much point in going.
