Talking Point / Talking Point - Rendel's Expenses
Talking Point - Rendel's Expenses
Friday 12th February 2010

Newbury Sound has exclusively revealed this morning that Liberal Democrat David Rendel claimed almost a thousand pounds for a new bed when he was Newbury's MP.

A copy of an expenses claim made by Mr Rendel in 2004 was passed to the radio station by an anonymous source. It was obtained from the House of Commons under a Freedom of Information Act request.

It shows how between 1st April 2003 and the end of March 2004, he claimed £1,840 for food, £820 to clean his flat, £126 for milk and newspapers as well as eleven thousand pounds in mortage payments plus refunds for council tax, maintenance and utilities.

Then, at the bottom of the form, is the claim for £934 for the new bed.

There is no suggestion that Mr Rendell has broken any rules, but this is the first time the claim for the bed has been in the public domain.

Three weeks ago, he issued a press release about his expenses. He said he was 'in the clear' after Sir Thomas Legg had examined the claims he had made from April 2004 onwards.

But the claim for the new bed relates to the 2003 financial year, and it is not known if this receipt was reviewed by Sir Thomas Legg.

We invited Mr Rendel to talk 'on -air' about his expenses and whether he thought it was right that the tax payer should have funded his new bed, but so far he has declined our invitation.

He told Newbury Sound that for the media to keep talking about the expenses issue is bad for politics and democracy and that all his claims are 'fully justified'.  He went on to say that he needed the new bed because he suffered back problems, and if his bad back had landed him in hospital, he would have been unable to serve his constituents.

In a few weeks time Mr Rendel will start his election campaign as he attempts to unseat Newbury's Conservative MP Richard Benyon.

You can see an image of the Claim Form below and leave your comment on the story.

G of Upper Bucklebury says:
09:19  on  Monday 17th May 2010
"I don't think he's done anything wrong at all. Plus, he's a genuinely nice chap. I agree with Dave A of Kingsclere. Don't blame the individuals, if you have a problem then blame the system. Plus Benyon and his family are extremely well off and therefore has no need to claim for things."

TC of Newbury says:
22:52  on  Friday 23rd April 2010
"I can't believe the lib dems in Newbury think that this is acceptable for an MP. Surely EVERYONE can see what a great MP Mr Benyon is? I do however get the impression that the Newbury Weekly News is a Lib dem paper! We want fairness, honesty and transparency in Newbury. "

Matthew Payne of Newbury says:
13:12  on  Monday 22nd February 2010
"David Rendel shows his address on the website as "Hopgoods, Upper Bucklebury, Thatcham", whereas Royal Mail and the electoral roll show it as "Hopgoods Green, Bucklebury, Reading". Is this an attempt to confuse the electors of Thatcham North and what did he put on his last nomination paper? "

Phil of Thatcham says:
22:14  on  Tuesday 16th February 2010
"Maybe on his new £900 bed!"

Shaun of Newbury says:
20:33  on  Tuesday 16th February 2010
"I was going to leave this, until I saw Rendel trying to have a pop at Richard Benyon over expenses in his latest misinformation Focus – how can he sleep at night? "

margo of Newbury says:
14:49  on  Sunday 14th February 2010
"In the present climate of the expenses scandal David Rendel might want to think twice about standing again....especially as Richard Benyon has shown him a clean pair of heels re his expenses claims or rather lack of them !"

Edward Asprey of Upper Bucklebury, Berkshire says:
13:04  on  Saturday 13th February 2010
"Richard Benyon has claimed no personal or living expenses, only expenses directly concerned with the running of his office. Compare that with Rendel and his bed, mortgage, cleaning, milk and papers claims."

Nick of Newbury says:
23:16  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"While my wages are less than a third of MP's wages, my employer would not buy me a new bed or pay my council tax, food or milk and papers. Whilst I feel accommodation costs for living in the capital are fair for people who live a long way from Parliament, you still only need the same food etc. If an MP buys a flat with taxpayer's money, who gets any profit when it is sold ? The expression "gravy train" springs to mind !"

Joe of Newbury says:
17:57  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"Never mind a new bed, how can he justify getting the public to buy newspapers and milk for him? "

Ellen of Thatcham says:
16:09  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"We have written to David Rendel on 3 occasions for disclosure of his expenses and he has failed to respond . Now we know why!!!!!"

Tim Wallis of Compton says:
15:59  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"To say that talking about expenses is bad for politics and democracy shows breathtaking arrogance and contempt for public opinion. He thoroughly deserved to lose his seat in 2005 if those are his views."

Liz Oliver of Cold Ash says:
15:07  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"His pathetic excuse for charging the taxpayer for his new bed shows a lack of moral fibre.I suggest he retires to his new bed and leaves Newbury to continue to be represented by Richard Benynon who has proved himself to be an honest, hardworking MP who continued his work even when on crutches without complaint. "

Debs of Cold Ash says:
14:56  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"immoral"

Alex of Thatcham says:
14:32  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"Check out the 'They Work For You' website where David Rendel was the highest claimer for Additional Costs Allowance in both 2002/03 and 2004/05!"

J Hume of Thatcham says:
14:18  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"Why do policitians actually need to claim for food, mortgage payments, etc. Why can't they, like the rest of us, earn a honest wage, pay taxes, and have respect for doing an honest job. I get very angry and am losing faith with the whole government system. They are out for themselves and not the people. Hard working people are suffering for the spongers of our society. It seems you do get something for doing nothing!! Bring on the election. "

Jan of Thatcham says:
13:58  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"I am very happy with Richard Benyon much better than the last Newbury MP!"

Carolynne of Newbury says:
12:54  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"no probs with Benyon - Telegraph named him a "Saint" and there wern't many of them!"

Dave A of Kingsclere says:
12:53  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"Maybe the British public will be happy when the only people that stand for office are those that are prepared to work for peanuts. Get a sense of proportion - we pay Johnathan Ross more than the entire cabinet of government. These guys are supposed to be running the country - what do you want from them? Do you want them to live in caravans and live off £50 a week before they get your respect?"

Emma of Newbury says:
12:09  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"Hey Paula, I have already checked out Richard Benyon's, it's all on his website www.richardbenyon.com ... nothing dodgy on there! I know where my vote will be! "

Paula of Newbury says:
11:52  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"Totally digusting - think it will probably be the end of his career ! Hope he doesn't canvass at my door. Can we see Richard Benyon's expense claims too ??"

Bertie of Newbury says:
11:44  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"I've got a bad back as well, do I get a taxpayers funded bed?"

Jane Brookes of Newbury says:
08:52  on  Friday 12th February 2010
"I also see he has claimed £20 a day to feed just him. I have to feed my FAMILY on a budget of £50 a week - so how can he take £140 a week just for himself? I wont be voting for him."
