Newbury Market

Although there is no record of its existence in the Domesday Book, Newbury market is believed to have been in place since Anglo-Saxon times. Earliest records show that a toll was received from the market in 1205, which amounted to £8.00, a very large sum in those days.
£4,040.96 In 2007 using the retail price index.

The Market has been refurbished and now provides a pleasant area within which to browse the stalls.

Trees have been planted and the surface is composed of granite sets laid in a pattern of whirls, which impart a Continental feel to the square, all traffic is banned with the exception of Buses and Taxis during the hours of 10.00am to 6.00pm.

The majority of the traders today have been on the market for many years. For example Geoff Fisher and his family have been present at Newbury market for over 60 years.

Fruit & Veg, fishmonger, herbs & spices, olives, bread & cakes, cheese, flowers, plants and books. We also have our 2 fresh butchers stalls, jams and chutneys, army surplus goods and a range of pet supplies.

You can relax with a cup of tea and hot food whilst you shop or trade from our market.
